PhD position in Imaging Genetics of Intelligence

Application Deadline:5 September 2009, Understanding how genetic variation affects brain functioning related to general intelligence is one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century.

Advances in both molecular genetics and functional and structural neuroimaging have provided the tools necessary to explore the effects of genetic variants on brain functioning. Identifying the brain mechanisms that underlie intelligence is paramount to our understanding of how individual differences in general intelligence emerge and how such differences may confer vulnerability to cognitive dysfunction. This project aims to identify these brain mechanisms by combining expertise from two excellent research groups, using an imaging genetics approach towards human intelligence.

This project is a collaboration between the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Nijmegen, and the Centre for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research, Amsterdam. You will be based within the Cognitive Neurology group அட் the Donders Instituteand will have frequent contacts with the genomics group atCNCR.

Requirements
You have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a field related to cognitive neuroscience (e.g. experimental/cognitive psychology, biology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence). Excellent candidates from other scientific backgrounds will also be considered. Good programming skills (Matlab) are highly desirable. Familiarity with neuroimaging techniques (functional and structural) and in genetic statistics are certainly an asset. Proficiency in oral and written English as well as good social skills are also required.

Organization
The Centre for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research (CNCR) was founded jointly by the VU University Amsterdam and the VU University Medical Centre.
At the centre, neurobiologists, clinical and preclinical neuroscientists and psychologists collaborate to contribute to the development of a new integrative neuroscience, rooted in molecular biology and genetics and extending all the way to behaviour and cognition in health and disease.

The Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour comprises the Centres for Cognition, Cognitive Neuroimaging and Neuroscience. The mission of the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging is to conduct cutting-edge research in cognitive neuroscience. Much of the rapid progress in this field is driven by novel neuroimaging techniques scanning the activity and structure of the human brain in vivo – a field of research in which the Centre plays a leading role. The research themes cover central cognitive functions such as perception, action, attention, cognitive control, memory, and language. The internationally renowned centre currently employs more than 100PhDstudents and post-doctoral researchers of more than 20 nationalities. The centre is equipped with three MRI scanners (7T, 3T, 1.5T), a 275 channels MEG system, an EEG-TMS laboratory, several (MR-compatible) EEG systems, and high-performance computational facilities. English is the lingua franca at the centre.

Conditions of employment
Employment: 1,0 fte
Maximum salary, based on a fulltime employment: € 2,612 gross/month
The gross salary will be between €2,042/month and €2,612 plus two yearly 8% bonuses (holiday and end-of-year).
Duration of the contract: Initially 18 months with possible extension by 2.5 yrs.

The Children´s Hospital of the Ulm University Hospital is inviting applications for an excellent, highly motivated PhD student in the field of cancer research/apoptosis.

In a multidisciplinary and international research group (group leader: Prof. Simone Fulda), we are studying apoptosis signaling in cancers to identify key molecules that regulate apoptosis in cancer cells.

We aim at translating our knowledge into the development of new cancer therapeutics and novel prognostic biomarkers with a focus on malignant brain tumors (e.g. see FASEB J, 2009, 23:21-33; Cancer Res, 2008, 68:7956-65; Oncogene, 2008, 27:5169-81; Cancer Res, 2008, 68:6271-80; Nat Med, 2002, 8:808-15). Techniques include retroviral gene transfer, siRNA technology, cell & molecular biology, biochemistry, microscopy, primary tumor samples and mouse tumor models.

* The position will be paid according to established scales for PhD students (TV-L/E13, 50%, i.e. roughly 1000 EUR net salary per month).

Strict Requirements:
* skills in cell and molecular biology
* very good command of English language
* M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in a highly relevant field (e.g. molecular biology). Candidates with degrees in biotechnology, human or veterinary medicine, bioinformatics, pharmacy and other distantly related areas are not considered, unless they demonstrate experience in apoptosis research.
* Your highest degree must have an average grade of at least 2.0 (in the German grading system) or an equivalent foreign grade (e.g. UK: 80%; France: 17; Italy: 52; India: 78%).
* Candidates from overseas can only be considered if they are able to attend a job interview in Germany. Unfortunately we cannot offer travel refund.

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 02 Research Personnel (01-Junior Research Fellow and 01-Technical Assistant) through a Walk-in-Interview to be held on Tuesday, 21^st July 2009. Details of project and position

Project Title, details of position and duration	Study of flora and fauna in the context of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) & Environment Management Plan (EMP) for command area of Narmada Canal Project in Rajasthan. (01 – JRF) Duration: One year
Essential Qualification	Masters degree in Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Life Science/ Environment Sciences/Biological Sciences/Wildlife Sciences with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification	Adequate knowledge and skills of conducting ecological and socio-economic surveys. Prior experience of working on projects related to the assessment of impacts of linear developments such as roads and canals on biodiversity and people.
Description of Work	The job would involve conducting environmental and social impact assessment studies of the Narmada Canal Project in the state of Rajasthan. Assist in preparation of an Environmental Management Plan to address the environmental issues associated with the project. The selected candidate will be required to work in south-western part of Rajasthan and should have good skills of computer use as well as data analysis.

Description of Work	Technical Assistant will be required to assist the Junior Research Fellow in collection of data related to evaluation of impacts of proposed Narmada Canal on natural resources and socio-economic aspects of people. The selected candidate will be required to work in south-western part of Rajasthan and should have good skills of computer use as well as data analysis.

GENERAL:

The age of the candidate shall not be more than 28 years as on 20^th July 2009. Upper age limit for JRF may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.
Selected candidate for the position of Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and Technical Assistant will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- and Rs. 6,400/- per month, respectively.
Research personnel may be allowed hostel accommodation at the Institute, as per availability. In case hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute. Other allowances and benefits to the Research Personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period(s) depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project.
The selection of the candidates will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Tuesday, 21^st July 2009 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun.

The Genetics & Biotechnology lab of Dr. Charles Spillane at University College Cork, Ireland is seeking applicant for a PhD position within the lab to work on genomic imprinting and gene dosage effects in Arabidopsis thaliana. The research will involve work on genetics, epigenetics, molecular biology, microscopy and genomics techniques, and significant exposure to bioinformatics. The successful applicants will work closely with postdocs and other research team members working on these areas within the lab. We are seeking highly motivated applicants who are eager to develop a long-term career in plant genetics research.
